How To Build A Simple Gravel Patio On A Small Budget

Gravel is the cheapest way to turn an unused corner of a yard into somewhere you actually sit. Here is the order of work, the materials, and the mistakes that cost money later.

A gravel patio is forgiving. It drains, it can be shaped by eye, and it can be lifted later if you change your mind.

Get the base right

Almost every failed gravel area failed at the base. Dig out about four inches, lay a permeable membrane, then a compacted sub-base before the decorative gravel goes down.

  1. Mark the shape with a hose and live with it for a day
  2. Excavate roughly four inches
  3. Lay landscape membrane with generous overlaps
  4. Add and compact a crushed stone sub-base
  5. Edge the area, then spread gravel about two inches deep

Make it feel like a room

One bench, two large pots and a run of string lights is enough. Resist filling the space before you have used it a few times.
